Sonia Bhalotra is Professor of Economics (Essex) and Co-Investigator on the HRBDT Project, with a focus on Health Rights. Her current work is related to Universal Health Coverage in Brazil; evaluation of accountability as it works through judicial health claims in Colombia; access to safe abortion facilities and, in particular, the international impact of the Global Gag Rule; domestic violence and sexual harassment cases in the criminal justice system in Brazil; and the impact of racial bias in incarceration rates in America on the mental health of young people, lone motherhood, and the early life environment of children.
Sonia is Co-Investigator on the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change, Visiting Professor University Gothenburg, Research Fellow SFI Denmark. Sonia recently acted as keynote in a British Academy debate on global inequalities, and panellist on Gender Equality at an SDG financing event at the European Investment Bank. She is on the International Advisory Boards of Lancet Women, Academics Stand Against Poverty Yale, The Millennium Nucleus for the Study of the Life Course Chile and a UNICEF network on Adolescents in Humanitarian Crises.
