On 10 – 11 April 2018, the British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association (BILETA) 2018 Annual Conference took place at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. This year’s conference theme was ‘Digital Futures: Places and People, Technology and Data’.
Krzysztof Garstka presented a conference paper on ‘Between Public Security and Data Protection: The Legality of Predictive Big Data Surveillance within the EU Data Protection Framework’. The paper analyses the EU data protection framework and maps the legal landscape governing the use of big data surveillance for the prevention of threats to public security. It addresses the conflict that arises between public security and data protection in cases of wide-ranging surveillance by intelligence and law enforcement to prevent terrorist attacks and other violent crimes.
