From 11 – 13 June 2018, the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum took place in Bonn. Attended by over 2,000 participants, the Forum considered the challenge of ‘Global Inequalities’ and promoted an interdisciplinary approach, with presentations from a wide range of actors.
Sam Dubberley gave a keynote address at the Forum on ‘Fighting the Fake News Playbook – Verification in the Human Rights World’. He spoke on the role and uses of social media in monitoring human rights violations, and the importance of verification, mentioning the work being undertaken in the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project on image recognition in the context of advancing human rights and humanitarian responses. He also spoke about challenges to come around accusations of ‘fake news’ and the risk of synthetic videos or deep fakes.
