I am delighted to introduce the first update of the ESRC Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project for 2020, covering Project member’s latest research, publications and activities up to the end of August. Alongside ongoing work on the design and use of data analytics and new and emerging technologies in areas such as law enforcement, health and social care in ageing populations, and the humanitarian sector, Project members have been actively engaged in research and shaping policy on human rights challenges that have emerged in the context of Covid-19. As detailed below, this has included work on contact-tracing apps, overcoming the digital divide, hate speech and disinformation and domestic violence. Our ongoing contributions on Covid-19 can be accessed via our new Covid19 webpage. We also reflect on the HRBDT Project’s 2019 activities which was a particularly busy and successful year, this is also available as a standalone pdf newsletter.
