We’re Hiring! Senior Research Officer (Rights, Regulation and Remedies)

Applications are invited for the position of Senior Research Officer, within the Human Rights Centre, University of Essex, to work on the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project.

Duties of the Role

The successful candidate will work on a number of issues and defined projects on the impacts of big data, smart technology and artificial intelligence on human rights. The post-holder will be based in the team focusing on identifying the human rights impacts of new and emerging technologies, the implementation of international human rights standards and norms, and the development of regulatory models in response to the risks identified. The post will also provide support to the teams working on surveillance, health and human rights, and the use of social media to document human rights violations and enhance humanitarian responses, where needed. The role will include undertaking research, producing a range of research outputs in a variety of formats, including blogs and journal articles, and engaging with key stakeholders.

Qualifications and Skills Required

The successful candidate will have a degree in law (or related discipline) as well as a postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to human rights and may have a PhD or equivalent involving work relevant to human rights. Engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile is essential along with a developing record of producing reports, papers, briefings and other outputs. Knowledge of the human rights law system and experience of organising events and conferences are essential to the role.
